A Preppy Mom's Car

After reading True Prep and re-reading TOPH, I was inspired by the illustrations and descriptions of the various preppy rooms and the like. So much so that, as I surveyed my Honda Odyssey, I felt led to write my own.  So I invite you to take a visit...

Front bumper:

Vanity plate from Edisto Beach where we have a summer house

Back window:

Converse College Donor sticker changes every year
Pink and Green sticker from Gabi in preparation for
the BIG trip!

Camp sticker from S's camp

      Front seat area:

      • CD case contents: 3 REM CDs from the late 80s to mid 90s, soundtracks to Rent and Les Mis, and whatever S and J have thrown in there
      • Tissue box
      • Lilly Pulitzer Bermuda Bag found under the driver's seat from this summer
      • Pink and green Turvis Tumbler a gift from a student last year. Usually filled with Crystal Lite Pink Lemonade
      • Brooks Brothers button-down and Vineyard Vines polo still in plastic bags to be returned/shipped to said stores as they are too small for J and too big for S, respectively. Have been in the car for over a month now.
      • Lilly Pulitzer key fob free gift from last sale
      • Lancome lipstick in "Crushed Rose"
      • Linda Francis Lee's Devil in the Junior League audiobook in the CD player I know it's been out forever, but Frede Ware and Nikki Grout always make me laugh!
      • S's golf glove
      • My bucket bag
      Back seat area:

      • Hot pink golf umbrella with my monogram in green
      • Target's version of the Reisenthel Market Tote used as a trash basket
      • Four sets of headphones at any given time at least two or three don't work due to kids throwing them around the van or dead batteries. Remember, I have only TWO children
      • J's golf glove
      • Basket of DVDs
      • Random DVD or CD who knows?
      • DVD remote NOT in the correct remote holder
      • Football
      • Chick-fil-a french fries and cups have finally been cleaned out
      Cargo Area:

      • S and J's golf bags
      • Lilly P. and Publix reusable grocery bags
      • My tennis bag
      • Numerous golf tees
      • Masters folding chair from 1993. In here because you just never know when you may be tailgating!
      • Jumper cables
      • Sand from trips to Edisto and Pawleys Island
Aren't all preppy mom-mobiles traveling storage units? And aren't they all really a window into our worlds?

      What Happens in Nantucket...

It all started innocently enough.  Five women from different parts of the east coast meeting on blogs.  I know that when I started blogging almost exactly a year ago, I had no idea what I was doing or getting myself into.  All I knew was that I knew another girl who blogged, I read hers, and said to myself, "I can do that."  Following, commenting, and blog rolls were not in my vocabulary.  But after a few posts, Jessica began commenting and following... then Gabi... then Mama Henley... then Katherine. And I began following theirs too.  Blogging and commenting led to Twitter.  And it was on that fateful night that we were all making snarky comments while watching the Golden Globes, a friendship we were not even anticipating was born.

We began emailing each other - all five of us at the same time.  I wish I could remember who it was that suggested that we meet.  Guess it doesn't matter.  But we all were excited.  After more emails, the date and place were finalized.
      Nantucket, September 2010

I secured my plane ticket in May.  There was no backing out.  It was happening.  The moment I saw and hugged Gabi at Logan Airport in Boston, I knew it was going to be great.  And almost two hours later, we met up with Jessica and Katherine.  (Sweet Mama Henley was not able to join us.  Oh how we cried when we read her post.)  The four of us squealed, screamed, and hugged each other not as if we were meeting for the first time, but as dear, old friends.  And then the talking and laughing commenced... and didn't stop until we left on Sunday.

Gabi mixing bloodies on the ferry to Nantucket.

Of course we had to compare the new edition
      with the tried and true...
      (Yes, I brought BOTH editions!)

       Jessica showing Flat Stanley
(from Jackson's class project) how to cook.
Yes, she was our chef extraordinaire for the weekend!

       At the brewery...
This evening really warrants a post all its own, but I just can't resist. Of course we walked  in as if we owned the place.  The place was packed, full of earthy preppies (mostly women) all in name tags.  Hmmm... Lots of Patagonia and madras.  And, hey, look over there.  Hmmm... quite a few golf bags.  Oh, this must be an after party for a golf tournament.  Hmmm... the girl Gabi asks to take our picture, thinks she is the photographer for this soiree.  Numerous other things made us go Hmmm... But hey, "it takes all kinds" as my mother says, and we are having a ball!  Good drinks, good friends, good fun... and then the icing on the cake:  Ms. Madras shorts jumps up on a table, raises her glass, and announces to the gathering, "Let's give a toast to Melissa and Jennifer and to the life they will lead together."  You guessed it, we crashed a lesbian wedding.  Big fun!

Many other stories happened on our Nantucket weekend.  We giggled throughout, saying, "What happens in Nantucket stays in Nantucket!"  But between the four of us, I know we'll share more with you throughout the next few weeks.  I laughed so hard my face hurt at times.  I shared so deeply, more than I might share with people here in my own town whom I feel pretty close to.  I learned so much about each of these women:  their successes, their worries, their delights and their passions.

Here we were on the ferry leaving Nantucket.

And here the four of us were right before we all said Goodbye.

      Not Your Everyday Hand Sanitizer

So the first week of school I have a student compliment me on my Lilly skirt. And now I receive this from another cutie pie...

I mean, how cute can hand sanitizer get?! (Honestly, I never thought I'd ask that question... LOL)

      Minnie Me!

It was a great day. Today I was wearing one of my favorite Lilly skirts and one of my cute students shyly came up to me.

Cute Student: Mrs. W***** I really like your Lilly.
Me: Why thank you M. How did you know that's what I'm wearing?
Cute Student: Oh I love Lilly, and I saw her name hidden in the pattern.
Me: Me too! And tomorrow I'm bringing my new fleece I bought from the big online sale last week. (Disclaimer: my classroom is like a frozen tundra!)
Cute Student: Sale?!?!?! (eyes real big) I can't wait to tell my mom! She loves Lilly as much as you and me!

It's going to be a great year... I can tell.

Monogram Friday... Read on, you'll get it!

Remember when when you were in college and you had a t-shirt for EVERY OCCASION OF YOUR LIFE???  I had fraternity party t-shirts, band party t-shirts, my girls' school (to be PC:  women's college) party weekend shirts, other college (especially if I dated a boy who went there) t-shirts... OMW, I'm surprised we didn't have one for every time we breathed!  I have since removed myself from all of these worn items. (Except for one, and that's another story!)  I am just not a t-shirt kind of girl any more.  Guess that's because I am a (very) early 40s lady now.

Thus, the dilemma arose every school year for me:  the school t-shirt dilemma.  Every Friday, we teachers are allowed to wear jeans - as long as we are wearing a C******** C***** Elementary t-shirt or a shirt that has the school name on it.  (And those are usually those asexual non-preppy polo type shirts.  Yuck.)  I know this promotes school spirit, and I know that it is a little treat we are given.  I just don't do t-shirts.  And as much as I love, love, love my school, I just don't do t-shirts.

So what's a preppy teacher to do?  Well, I came up with an amazing plan last year. (And my wonderful principal did approve it!)  You see, I love a good monogram on a cute scoop neck Eddie Bauer or Tarjay tee.  So... take a peek at what my monogram is every Friday!
Score one for preppy teachers everywhere!
(And a big smoochie for my BFF who did the monogramming...)

      DesignHer Bevy!

How many of you have discovered this fun website: designhergals.com? I do know a bunch of you have as I have seen a few of your creations on your blogs.  I had more fun a few weeks ago "putting myself together" as it was.  It's like making your very own virtual paper doll!

What cute clothes and shoes!  Jack Rogers, TB Revas, Longchamp bags.  (Wish they had cute Lilly skirts!!!) And how did they ever know my exact hair style and "cullah"???  I created my Bevy as my profile picture on Facebook.  When my husband saw it, he was pretty amazed at how much he thought it looked like me - and my personality.  You must try it!  Very fun...

Other than it being a little more trim
than I am in real life...
      Welcome to Me!

      It's Official...

... I am a Socialite.  (And that kind of makes me giggle.)  But at least that's what my friends at The Preppy Mafia say!  I was tagged and have the change to share a little about myself... also share this cute button with you!

      1. Who is your style icon?  Reese Witherspoon.  She is so classic, southern, and a former debutante.  Even when she is “dressing down”, she is so put together.

      2. What is your favorite socialite lit book?  Love Devil in the Junior League by Linda Francis Lee.

      3.  Favorite party theme? Winter - Christmas Open House... Spring - Aiken Steeplechase

      4. “Go to” Halloween costume? Didn’t have one until reading about Beth’s witch hat (I already own!) and black cocktail dress (ditto!)… Très chic!

      5. Extravagance you cannot live without? Is having a maid really considered an extravagance?   I also love a good pedicure… must book one now!

      6. Living person you admire? Laura Bush

      7. Greatest Fear? Something happening to our boys.

      8. Trait you deplore in yourself? My weight… gets in the way of cute clothes!

      9. Which talent would you most like to have? Flower arranging... never have had the opportunity to learn.  And I love having fresh flowers around the home.  Sigh...

      10. Greatest Achievement? Bouncing back and ON TOP after my divorce…then  marrying the right guy and living the life I love (and deserve!) with him and our boys.

So, there is a snapshot of a southern Socialite from SC...
      (Still makes me giggle!)
Oh, and pictures from Steeplechase will be posted soon!

      Oh Tretorn, Where Art Thou?

I saw them in the LandsEnd catalog.  I saw them on some of your blogs as you reminisced about them in your younger years.  I even saw them on Zappos.com.  They were back: my beloved Tretorn tennis shoes.

What wonderful memories I have of my many pair.  A few stand out:
      • The blue with whale print shoelaces (remember those???).  I used to dance when I was younger, and during one rehearsal of our company's production of The Nutcracker, the director grabbed one in a pinch to represent the real Nutcracker.  Our city's newspaper was there doing a photo shoot, and my blue Tretorn was all over the article!  I was so proud!
      • The pink.  I worked as a waitress at Kanuga, in the mountains of N.C,during the summers of '85 and '86.  This is the wonderful place my family has summered every year of my life (visualize the resort in Dirty Dancing ).  The parties, the first real summer romances, the hikes around the lake, the "this is the BEST summer of my life - EVER!"
      • The Madras. My college Tretorns that no one else had.  A boy I had a crush on always called me Tipsy, for the book Tipsy in Madras.  Alas, the flirting never evolved into anything else...
So you can see why I was so excited when I saw that LandsEnd had them at 30% off and free shipping.  How fun!  I can relive my create some new Tretorn memories!  I ordered the white on white as I thought they would be nice, Preppy casual shoes if I didn't want to wear my Eliza Bs.  I anxiously awaited their arrival, and when they did, I was so... disappointed.

You see, these are not the same marshmallow soft shoes I remember.  Gone is the scrumptious terry lining that enveloped your foot.  Gone are the almost "waffle weave" thick laces.  Even the logo has obviously gone on a diet as it is not the same robust "V" on the side.  The picture above is pretty much what I see in person.  I was heartbroken.

They are ok on the comfort end.  They are acceptable.  They don't offend me.  And they are the originals.  But they aren't my old, beloved Tretorns of the 80's and early 90's.  So I ask, dear friends, What would you do?

***Update... Checked the website at Zappos.com and saw lots of different views of the shoe.  They look just like mine.  Also, read quite a few reviews by others.  Those that remember the "good old days" had the exact same reaction I did.  Doesn't seem to matter where you buy them.

      Channeling Your Inner L.L.

A few months ago, Beth AKA Social Climbers asked some fellow bloggers when they realized they were of the WASP heritage and when the ultimate awareness of their preppiness surfaced.   Here is my epiphany.

Most of the people I grew up with were the same as me.  Therefore, I didn't have many different kinds of people to compare myself to.  Oh, I did go to a public high school.  However, I still tended to stay with the friends I had grown up with, gone to the same Episcopal church with, and spent the summers at Pawley's Island with.  (Excuse the poor grammar with all the prepositions at the end of clauses and sentences!  I am shivering at the sight!)

However, that was about to change the summer after graduation and before I packed my bags for Converse College (bastion of WASP and prep - as most girls schools were in the 80s).  My father was friends with one of the big-wigs at the South Carolina Tax Commission and had arranged a summer job for me.  That's fine, I thought.  I would be home with all my friends for one last summer - and I would have a few weeks off for time at our house at Pawley's and up in the mountains of N.C.  But my father had another idea.

That idea was that I was going to build character that summer.  What?!?!  I had plenty of character!  No, my father stressed, I was going to see how the other half worked:  I spent the summer of 1987 working in the mammoth file room, filing tax returns for the fine people of the state of South Carolina.

And did I ever build character.  I won't go into all the backgrounds, style preferences in clothing and hairstyles, and propensity for gum-smacking I encountered.  And I definitely stuck out with my pearls and Laura Ashley dresses.  However, one event clearly sticks in my brain from that summer - the monumental event that opened my eyes that I was different:

I was filing tax returns in the rear of the building and came across a group of about 3-4 other employees.  They were obviously having a very heated discussion about something I had no idea.  Enter Bevy.
      • Bevy:  Hey y'all!  What's going on?
      • Group:  Just talking 'bout L.L.
      • Bevy:  L.L.???
      • Group:  Yeah, you know:  L.L. Cool J.
      • Bevy (puzzled look on her face):  L.L. Cool J.?  The only L.L. I know is L.L. Bean!
      • Leader of Group:   What do he sing?
      Obviously, character won that summer...

Point to ponder:  Do you think L.L. Cool J. wears L.L. Bean?

A Preppy Christmas Thought Just for YOU!

Today was the last day of school before the Holidays.  Hooray!

Yesterday was Polar Express day where we all donned our best flannel pj's, drank hot chocolate with marshmallows, and watched the (new) holiday classic.  What fun!  Today was the all-school sing-a-long which was just as crazy as you could imagine with a million children all dressed in red and green, singing holiday songs at the top of their lungs.

Today was also our class party.   Before the feeding frenzy, we made painted glass ornaments.  I do this every year and the kids love it.  The parents love it too, because the finished product is actually très beautiful.  The children swirled two different colors of paint inside the ornament and went to town!  We had Christmas music going. and they started dancing around the room shaking their ornaments to get the paint all over the inside!  What fun!

Of course I had to make one to show them the steps.
      And... sweet, cute friends,
      when I chose the colors,
      I thought of YOU!
      Pink and Lime Green!
      Isn't is too cute?!?!

      Preppy Blessings...
