30 minutes and counting until the Tour of Homes...

In just 30 minutes, my house will be on display for the women
of Aiken, South Carolina.
Just a taste of what will invite them into my home...

I'll blog later tonight (or tomorrow) and let you know
whether or not I still have my wits!

Breakfast Room Fluffing Part 2

Hooray!  After a week of a dealing with a yucky sinus infection, I get a sweet treat!  The window treatments are up and the chair cushions are recovered... Life is so good.

Before

After

No more cavernous ceilings and empty space.
Now warm and cozy!
Even though it is cold, misty, and rainy outside...
for me:  it's a golden day!

Happy 101 to Me!

Thank you Beth at Social Climbers  for the Happy 101 Award!  Beth must be one of the funniest chicks out there... Her blogs are hilariously entertaining and full of fun, preppy tidbits any WASPy girl would completely get.  What a treat that I was chosen!  (Nice to know that some people think of "happy" when they think of me!)  Thanks, sweet girl!

So... here's what I - and then you - need to do:

1. List 10 things that make you happy.
2. Tag 10 bloggers that brighten your day.

10 things that make me happy:

1. Decorating my house for Christmas.
2. Knowing that my husband loves me even more than he did on the day he married me - even though my derierre and hips are bigger than they were then!
3. Going through the same, special bedtime routines with each of my sons as I did when they were very young.
4. My younger son, J, asking if he can give me a foot massage with Thymes Eucalyptus lotion.
5. When my oldest son, S, takes my elbow every time we cross a busy street so that he can make sure I'm OK.
6. Baking for friends and family.
7. Long phone calls with my sister.
8. Watching my boys and their little girl cousins jumping on the trampoline at their Mimi's house.
9. Wearing bright fun Lilly cable knit sweaters in the winter.
10. Knowing that my God knows everything about me and loves me anyway!

I tag... you're it!

Have a glorious weekend... we are off to a cocktail party in the balcony of our local theater where we will enjoy a production of "It's a Wonderful Life".  What a wonderful evening!

Cocktails and Codeine

That got your attention didn't it?!  Some of you know that I have been home for the past two days with a miserable cough.  Completely exhausting.  My head and chest feel like they have been in a vice.  But my wonderful husband has been so sweet and understanding, even as I have been keeping him up the past few nights with my coughing.   My family has been eating cereal for the past two nights, the laundry is piled in the laundry room, and I've looked like as cast member of  "Night of the Living Dead".

But now I think he is ready for me to get better - and quickly. So my husband convinced me to finally see our doctor (like taking an act of Congress!) to get me well.

The diagnosis:  acute sinus infection.

The treatment:  seven days of antibiotics... and cough medicine with CODEINE!

Ah.... Looking forward to a restful night...

Southern Ornaments

I should be at school right now, but I am sick in bed with a hacking cough.  So what am I doing to take my mind off of how miserable I am feeling?  Checking out all of your fun blogs in this magical and blessed season of Advent/Christmas!

Here are a few ornaments that we have on our tree.  They have all been created by using natural resources native to South Carolina - and other southern states.

Here are two sweet "okra" angels with Spanish moss for their hair...

Next, is a smiling Santa painted on a crab shell...

This little angel was born of a cotton bole from the hunting plantation of S's godfather.
Again, the Spanish moss for hair...

Another Santa, another okra!

And, another sweet angel... (I am feeling like the commentator for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show!)

This smiling snowman was once a starfish off the coast of
Pawley's Island, SC... (don't tell PETA!)

Lobster Santa isn't native.  I got him at the Cape a few years ago, but he fits in well!

OK, so natural resources didn't really play into this
Nativity Scene ornament, but I love it...
and it was made by a South Carolina native:  my son!

Happy Advent... only 16 more days!

Hats Off to the Junior League

Mike and I traveled back to my hometown this past weekend for Christmas party my sister and brother-in-law were hosting with a few other couples.  It was great seeing old friends and catching up on everyone's lives and holiday plans.  The big topic of conversation was the Junior League of Columbia's Holiday Market which was going on that weekend.

Conversations were buzzing on all the preparations, behind the scenes work, the success of the Preview Party, and the new event:  PJs with Santa.  I listened to every detail, and asked questions about pictures I had seen posted on Facebook.  Why?  Because not so long ago, I was in the throngs of it myself.

I joined the JLC at the ripe old age of 23, just a year out of college.  My mother and grandmother's friends were my sponsors, and I jumped into the vestige of volunteerism with glee.  I loved being involved; my favorite placement was Provisionals Chair.  I felt I was at Headquarters so often that my sons (when they were very young) were never surprised when we pulled up in the parking lot.

I resigned from the JLC when I knew I was moving to Aiken.  I was also 38, only a few years from sustaining.  (Aiken doesn't have a Junior League.)  I didn't think I would miss it that much.  But I guess I do.  The Junior League is such an asset to its community.  Its volunteers are some of the most committed and "with it" women I know.  They are not just society women with too much time on their hands.  My daddy always says, "If you want something -anything - done right, you call the Junior League."  And he is right!

So hears to you, ladies of the Junior League of Columbia.  You did it again!

Blessings...

You Can't Plan These Moments

You can't plan these moments.  Mike, the boys and I had just finished watching The Polar Express, and Sumter decided to get the book out to read it to us.  So cute that Jackson snuggled up next to him.

He was almost finished when Jackson started reading it!
(...remember that Jackson is my dyslexic child)
What a great way to end the weekend...

Blessings...
